Bill Hicks, an American comedian, asked once: Is there anyone in the audience, whos into advertising? Do us a favour and kill yourself. I think many people fee the same when they realise how manipulated they are.
Publicity has always been an essential part of trade. Where there was selling, there had to be advertising. Nevertheless, the intensity of it has changed a lot. When a smith in the Roman Empire sold a sword, he urged always that the commander who had bought it, recommend his forgery to his fellow soldiers. A millennium later, when first newspapers the ways of publicity have changed. Forever.
It was not until the 20th century that we witnessed a dramatic change in this field. From trust-based recommendations we passed to an advertising that literally attacks its targets. In a bus-stop, on the bus itself, in the cinema, in the streets and, not to mention, at shopping centres. Publicity entered even into the privacy of our households (by means of the Internet and other media). We get the impression that there really is no escape from it. In order to truly defend oneself, one ought to render himself blind and deaf, but I guess that wouldnt be the point.
All in all, I agree that advertising, even if not banned, should be limited radically and people who are into it, even if not killed, but on house arrest until they come up with some less invasive methods.
